War Memoirs of Corregidor Island

a day tour of historic appreciation
june 4, 2011 saturday

objective:
to visit the best tourist spot that fits to my budget at limited amount of time.
additional tasks: to be educated about the history of filipino bravery during the wars.

important note (corregidor island):
Corregidor Island, locally called Isla ng Corregidor, is a lofty island located at the entrance of Manila Bay in southwestern part of Luzon. Corregidor (Fort Mills) is the largest of the islands that form the harbor defense of Manila Bay together with El Fraile Island (Fort Drum), Caballo Island (Fort Hughes) and Carabao Island (Fort Frank), which were all fortified during the American occupation of the country.

availed via voucher promoted in a famous travel blog last january 2011, my travel buddy reserved a ticket for me and will be paid during the travel day. i thought it was just a so-so trip since it was just an over an hour distance to manila but i was wrong. when i first saw the island on the ferry boat, i immediately thought and i couldn'tly think it was a major warzone during those times.

Corregidor comes from the Spanish word “corregir,” meaning to correct. this was due to the Spanish system wherein all ships entering Manila Bay were required to stop and have their documents checked and corrected, the island was called "Isla del Corregidor" (Island of the Correction).

this tadpole-shape island is part of cavite city, particularly of sangley point and also known as "the rock". corregidor is 6 km long and 2.4 km in its widest area only and has three parts, the topside, the middleside and the bottomside. topside is where the bulk of the batteries, parade grounds and office quarters located. the barracks and hospital was located in the middleside while malinta tunnel is located in the bottomside.

malinta tunnel, is called that way because it was full of leeches back then during the on-going construction of tunnel. "linta" is the filipino term for leech. it was the last stronghold of the philippine-american joint military forces and now become the showcase of lights and sound presentation of the events during world war 2. there were 23 batteries installed on the island and one lighthouse built by the spaniard.
